Chapter 8 Periodic Relationships Among the Elements
-

Cut out and assemble the
Pyramid Table. It may seem that cutting out a table and gluing together a pyramid is a pretty elementary assignment, but this is a very clever 3-D periodic table. The extra dimension dramatically shows the energy levels and subshells. This novel arrangement clearly shows the s, p, d & f subshell blocks on the periodic table and makes a pretty desktop decoration. Look it over carefully after constructing it.
Then starting with the hydrogen peak, follow the sequence of the spiral road down and around noting the subshell type switch for each side of the pyramid: s, p, d, and f.
Theodore Gray's Wooden Periodic Table is an excellent site for learning about what the elements really are like.
There are a number of interesting personal stories about the author's experiences with the elements.
Sodium is a reactive element and beginning chemists often try to get some to experiment with. However, the experiments can often lead to serious accidents.
Read about the sodium parties and the cautions that must be taken when working with sodium. While being a chemistry teacher is a lot of hard work, not many other jobs involve the fun of tossing sodium into water.
The follow up stories sent by home experimenters are interesting. My favorite is the touching story, Fire from the Sky.
