Become Fluent in Chemistry with Study Cards
Get a set of 3" by 5" index cards.
To be able to work with the concepts in chemistrty, you must have a basic vocabulary and set of facts available for immediate recall. If you haven't memorized this important information, you will constantly be stumbling as you try to learn chemistry. As we go through the course, I will summarize the important facts that you should memorize and be ready to recall. So, have your blank flash cards ready to fill out. Using these cards is a classic, tried and true way to become fluent in chemistry.
Many students organize their flash cards using rings. You can purchase ring punched fashcards or make them yourself.
Here's some advice on how to use your study cards with a ring.
- Write the question on one side of a card and the answer on the other.
- Fill out as many cards as you need.
- Look at a question side. Do you remember the answer?
- Flip it over. Were you right?
- When you get to the end, go through them again.
- After a few rounds, you will have memorized quite a few.
- Open the ring and take out the cards you know.
- Keep on going until you've memorized all of them.
- Pull out your flash cards at random times to quiz yourself.
- Practice your flash cards with a partner.
- Practice your flash cards in different settings (training in different environments improves memory and speed of recall).
- Show your parents how brilliant you are by having them drill you with the flash cards.
